It all starts with the new 2.5L I4 engine using Atkinson-cycle combustion to make the most of each drop of gas. The engine works with the electic traction motor to create 177 net horsepower – 14% more than the previous powertrain. The electric traction motor also captures kinetic energy during Regenerative Braking and uses it to recharge the 330-volt battery pack. The battery pack then completes the cycle by supplying energy to start the engine, to drive at low speeds, and to boost acceleration!
For lively V6-like acceleration performance (with lower average fuel costs), Hybrid Drive modes gives the gas engine an extra boost whenever you need it. So you get the best of both worlds: serious SUV capability and outstanding hybrid fuel efficiency.  In a conventional vehicle when you brake, the energy is lost as heat. When Escape Hybrid brakes, the electric motor captures this energy that is normally lost and sends it back to the battery pack to be stored for later use. Whenever you apply the brakes, you are, in effect, recharging the battery pack. Engineers call this regenerative braking and it represents a major part of the Escape Hybrid’s fuel efficiency advantage over conventional vehicles. |
